“EPIX is thrilled to partner with John Varvatos, Iggy Pop, Derik Murray and the entire team on Punk,” said Michael Wright, President, EPIX. “Their rare insights, passion and unmatched talent have made this project an unforgettable journey, and we can’t wait to see this story unfold in the way that only this team can tell it.”

Filmmakers slated to appear are Paul Feig, Sofia Coppola, Ryan Coogler and Guillermo del Toro. Mitchell, who created the project, will executive produce with Cheri Barner and Wildline’s Simon Helberg, Jocelyn Towne and Cora Olson. Said Mitchell, “This is my dream of a show. It’s an origin story — how these artists got to be — set in the places that formed them. And it’s a show where people get to explain themselves, rather than hustle a new project. I’m thrilled these artists gave me the gift of their time, and thankful to Michael Wright and Rachel Brill at EPIX for giving me this platform.”

And there is no better person to bring these ideas forward then Elvis Mitchell,” said Craig H. Shepherd, Vice President, Zero Point Zero Production.

Said Wildline’s executive producer, Simon Helberg, “I’ve always been intrigued and maybe a little obsessed with the stories behind great works of art. But no one is as obsessed with these stories as Elvis Mitchell – so we sent him around the world to bring us back some answers from the most compelling filmmakers of our generation.”

Elvis Goes There joins a growing slate of original programming for EPIX, includingGodfather of Harlem (from executive producers Chris Brancato and Paul Epstein, and Oscar® winner Forest Whitaker, who also stars), drama series Pennyworth, the DC Comics origin story from Warner Horizon Television, and Our Lady, LTD, starring Oscar® winner Sir Ben Kingsley, all currently in production for 2019 debuts.

New York, NY – October 9, 2018 – Premium network EPIX® has announced its latest original documentary for 2018, The Panama Papers, slated to premiere Monday, November 26 at 9 PM ET. From acclaimed director Alex Winter (Deep Web), Bungalow Media + Entertainment, Trouper Productions and Zipper Bros. Films, The Panama Papers details the unprecedented coordination of journalists from around the world working in secret, at great personal risk, to expose the largest data leak in history: a global corruption scandal involving corrupt power brokers, the uber rich, elected officials, dictators, cartel bosses, athletes and celebrities who had used the Panamanian law firm of Mossack Fonseca to hide their money. The story cracked open a hidden network of tax evasion, fraud, cronyism, bribing government officials, rigging elections, and murder.

“I am thrilled and honored to be working with EPIX again to tell this story. The Panama Papers strikes at the heart of the issues of corruption and inequality, which is an especially important story in our current political climate,” said Winter.

The Panama Papers strikes at the heart of the biggest themes of our times; income inequality, whistleblowers and corrupt power-brokers manipulating world governments and big business.  The Panama Papers is produced by Robert Friedman, Alex Winter and Glen Zipper and is Executive Produced by Laura Poitras and Charlotte Cook.

Prolific filmmaker Alex Winter last collaborated with EPIX on the multiple award-winning documentary Deep Web, which, following its EPIX premiere, opened as the #1 documentary on iTunes when it went wide in September 2015.  Winter has recently completed two short documentary films for Laura Poitras’s Field of Vision; Relatively Free and Trump’s Lobby.  He is now completing the documentary feature Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain for SingularDTV and Futurism Studios. His next project is Zappa; the first all-access documentary on the life and times of Frank Zappa. The Kickstarter campaign for this project was the highest funded documentary in crowdfunding history.

Producer Robert Friedman added, “As a filmmaker, Alex captured both the intrigue and drama of one of the most compelling stories of this decade, providing a unique and inside look at the heroic journalists involved in the Panama Papers.”

Friedman’s recent projects include the Emmy Award winning GIVE for NBC, the feature documentaries Spring Broke on Showtime, We the People: The Market Basket Effect, HBO’sParadise Lost, Sundance’s Iconoclasts, Under African Skies for A&E, the upcoming four-part docu-series The Preppie Murder for Sundance and the Clive Owen feature film The Confirmation.

“Collaborating with Alex to tell this story at such a volatile moment in American history felt like going on a mission. I can’t wait to share this film with the world, and look forward to the important conversations I know it will engender,” said Zipper Bros. Films founder Glen Zipper.

In addition to producing the Academy Award® winning documentary Undefeated, Glen Zipper recently produced HBO’s critically acclaimed Elvis Presley: The Searcher, and is currently producing Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Untitled Muhammad Ali Documentary as well as Season 2 of Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tourbus.

“Field of Vision is thrilled to collaborate with Alex on The Panama Papers. It is a vitally important story about the hidden world of international corruption, and the real world risks that sources and journalists are willing to take,” said Laura Poitras.

Laura Poitras’ film CITIZENFOUR won an Oscar for best documentary, as well as awards from BAFTA, Independent Spirit Awards, and the Directors Guild of America. The first film in her post-9/11 trilogy, My Country, My Country, was nominated for an Oscar. The second film, The Oath, was nominated for two Emmys. Her reporting on NSA surveillance received the George Polk Award for National Security journalism, and shared in the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for public service.

Nada Cirjanic, Head of Sales for Great Point Media, is handling worldwide sales of The Panama Papers.

It is responsible for designing, developing and operating EPIX’s entire digital platform and app portfolio including 15 streaming apps, EPIX.com, as well as its custom-built CMS and API platform.

EPIX Digital runs completely in Agile/Scrum, working in 3-week “sprints” where all features/fixes/improvements are captured and planned as user stories or “tickets.” In 2018 the team completed and shipped 7,500 tickets, nearly doubling their productivity from 2017 and shipping updates to all platforms at least once per every work day of the year. Among its accomplishments in 2018:

– Launched 4 new custom-built streaming apps: for PlayStation, Android TV, Xbox and Roku

– First network to launch 4K Ultra HD streaming for entertainment content

– Many new cross-platform features shipped including an Enhanced Binge experience and Cast & Crew search from titles

The truly diverse EPIX team loves working hard together, and loves its customers, and it shows. It has achieved a 5-star rating on Apple platforms where users are notoriously critical. To foster a creative teamworking culture EPIX ran a 24-hour Hackathon where this year’s winners received drones and smart speakers. And a highly important part of the team’s culture is celebrating its diversity; two-thirds of the US team is of a minority/international background! There is truly no Digital team like it.

EPIX: The First TV Network To Stream 4K Ultra HD Movies In The USA

EPIX was founded with the tagline “We Get BIG Movies” and was early in its adoption of broadcasting and streaming HD video. As the adoption of 4K Ultra HD has now hit some critical inflection points in the US (100% of all large-format TVs sold are now 4K, 4K TV sets being sold for <$300, etc) EPIX was ready to enter this new area and provide an even greater experience for its distribution partners and its viewers. First unveiled in February of 2018, EPIX became the first US premium network to stream 4K Ultra HD content to its users.

Launching first on Apple TV, EPIX began streaming Hollywood hit movies in glorious 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Digital Plus audio including titles such as The Arrival, The Magnificent Seven, Star Trek Beyond and Transformers: The Last Knight. In addition, EPIX distributed 4K movies through its Pay TV partners including DISH Network and Layer3. In doing so, EPIX became the first premium TV network in the US to stream 4K Ultra HD through its own apps, and through Pay TV distributors. This event has been considered a key industry milestone in the rollout of 4K Ultra HD technology for consumers.

To achieve this industry first was a massive undertaking across many areas, exacerbated by how bleeding-edge 4K streaming truly is. Technically it required EPIX to encode video in 11 different renditions and resolutions, with the highest bitrate being up to 21 Mbps. Fine-tuning the appearance of our content across myriad TV devices required many video experiments to optimize quality and resolution with various compression techniques and bitrates. Many members of the team also tested the content at home to analyze quality on various TV panels over different broadband speeds. If it were easy to do, EPIX probably wouldn’t have been the first!
