New York (Sept. 12, 2013) – Today, premium network EPIX announced that it has set Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. ET as the premiere date for SCHOOLED: The Price of College Sports. The timely and controversial documentary will air on the network and will be available on all platforms including EPIX On Demand, EpixHD.com and EPIX apps on hundreds of devices including Xbox, PS3, Roku, iPads, iPhones and more.

SCHOOLED: THE PRICE OF COLLEGE SPORTS is a new original documentary that examines the provocative issues surrounding the business of college sports and the NCAA’s treatment of its athletes.  Pulitzer Prize winning civil rights scholar, Taylor Branch, bases the exposé on a controversial 2011 article that ran in The Atlantic “The Shame of College Sports”.  Narrated by actor Sam Rockwell, the documentaryweaves interviews, archival and behind-the-scenes footage to tell the story of how college sports has become a billion dollar industry built on athletes who are robbed of monetary privileges.  Those interviewed include: former college and NFL player and president of the NFL Players Association Domonique Foxworth, UCLA star and NBA player Ed O’Bannon, former University of Tennessee All-American and star running back for the Houston Texans Arian Foster, former UCLA standout now Green Bay Packers running back Johnathan Franklin, former UCLA punter now member of the Minnesota Vikings Jeff Locke and former University of North Carolina fullback Devon Ramsay, whose eligibility case was one of the most controversial in recent NCAA history. Also interviewed for the film are Emmy-winning sportscaster Bob Costas, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, New York Times reporter Joe Nocera and Dave Zirin of The NationSports Illustrated reporters Frank Deford, George Dohrmann, BJ Schecter and Michael Rosenberg join them; and longtime college sports marketing innovator Sonny Vaccaro is also featured in the film.

Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO says, “The treatment of college athletes is an increasingly disturbing issue in the sports world. SCHOOLED: THE PRICE OF COLLEGE SPORTS does an excellent and responsible job of addressing a controversial issue and creating a springboard for discussion.”

When first published Branch’s article set off a firestorm of controversy and admiration. At the time, Sports Illustrated’s Frank Deford said the story “may well be the most important article ever written about college sports.”  Branch, who also appears in the documentary, argues that decades of greed and self-interest have finally caught up with the NCAA and that the organization is poised to collapse under the weight of its own hypocrisy.

FILTHY GORGEOUS, THE CAPTIVATING STORY OF PENTHOUSE FOUNDER BOB GUCCIONE, PREMIERES ON EPIX NOVEMBER 8 AT 11PM ET

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Filthy Gorgeous, The Captivating Story of Penthouse Founder Bob Guccione, Premieres on EPIX November 8 at 11PM ET

EPIX to Present Provocative New Film at the Toronto International Film Festival with Premiere on EPIX, EpixHD.com, and EPIX apps in November

Filthy Gorgeous To Air Followed By Guccione’s Controversial Film Caligula

New York, NY (August 29, 2013) – Premium network EPIX is pleased to announce the world premiere of the EPIX Original Documentary Filthy Gorgeous on November 8 at 11PM ETthe little known and fascinating story of Bob Guccione’s life, a businessman whose creativity and passion led him to build a publishing empire only to lose it all at the end of his life. EPIX will present Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story, directed by Barry Avrich, at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival in September followed by the November premiere of the film on EPIX, online at EpixHD.com and on EPIX apps on Xbox, Roku, iPads and more.

Guccione played a starring role in one of the most contentious social and sexual revolutions in modern history through his publication of Penthouse. An unlikely catalyst of the 1960’s counter culture, Guccione used his art and candid views on sexuality and politics to create scandal, spark debate, and implement change, all the while leading a relatively quiet and reclusive lifestyle. Penthouse was a formative magazine, dedicated to freedom of speech with an emphasis on controversial journalism and advancing the dialogue of sexuality with greater explicitness in a magazine than ever before. However a series of decisions led to the fall and eventual bankruptcy of Penthouse, with Guccione losing his fortune and dying shortly after. The film explores his rise and fall and its greater impact on American culture through rare home videos, exclusive interviews with Guccione and revealing conversations with his family, past lovers, and close confidants.

“Bob Guccione was a complex man whose publications impacted the lives of many, both in positive and negative ways. The film is incredibly intriguing and one our viewers will not want to miss,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO.

Said Director Barry Avrich, “Filthy Gorgeous explores Guccione’s legacy which is unforgettable, scandalous and extraordinary. We were thrilled to work with EPIX to bring that legacy to light and engage viewers with the untold details of such an important figure in our culture.”

Filthy Gorgeous will premiere followed by Caligula, Guccione’s controversial and revolutionary film written by Gore Vidal and starring Helen Mirren and Malcolm McDowell. Guccione was a key player in the creation of Caligula and its prominence in breaking down barriers through the telling a violent, intense and erotic story of the rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula.

Produced, Written and Directed by Barry Avrich, Filthy Gorgeous: The Bob Guccione Story is a Melbar Entertainment Group production in association with EPIX, Astral’s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central, with funding from Rogers Telefund, CAVCO and the OMDC.

EPIX ACQUIRES U.S. RIGHTS TO MILIUS, DOCUMENTARY EXPLORING THE LIFE OF FAMED DIRECTOR JOHN MILIUS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EPIX Acquires U.S. Rights To Milius, Documentary Exploring The Life of Famed Director John Milius

Milius to be Presented During 2013 Telluride Film Festival; Will Make U.S. Premiere on EPIX in Early 2014

New York, NY (August 29, 2013) – EPIX, premium entertainment network, announced today the acquisition of U.S. rights to the new documentary Milius which will be screened at the 2013 Telluride Film Festival. The EPIX Original Documentary, which will premiere on EPIX and all platforms including EpixHD.com and on EPIX apps, examines the life story of one of the most influential and controversial film directors in the history of Hollywood, John Milius, and his fall from Hollywood grace despite his legendary work.

Milius’ work includes infamous films such as “Apocalypse Now”, “Jaws”, “Conan The Barbarian”, “Dirty Harry” and “Red Dawn” but he ultimately faced dismissal from Hollywood due to his radical beliefs and controversial behavior. He was a mentor to filmmaking greats including George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and had a profoundly positive impact on their career, and yet he began to find it increasingly difficult to get his projects made due to violence and fallout from Red Dawn. The documentary explores whether the persona of “Milius” – the gun slinging, anti-Hollywood conservative – may have completely overshadowed “John”, the acclaimed writer and director. Are his best years behind him? Or is his final chapter going to redefine what the world, and the movie industry, thinks of John Frederick Milius?

The film includes in depth interviews with Milius himself and others such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Francis Ford Coppola, Harrison Ford, Michael Mann, Robert Zemeckis, Oliver Stone, Bryan Singer, Charlie Sheen, Matthew Weiner and more.

Milius is the fascinating story about a major character in Hollywood who brought some of the most influential films to light, and yet whose polarizing personality led to his obscurity. It will be a tremendous addition to the EPIX Docs slate and we’re pleased to premiere it on all platforms our viewers will want to watch it,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO.

“We made a documentary that highlights the trials and tribulations of one of Hollywood’s biggest living influencers, whose pipeline of directing work stalled but who remains very much an icon. We are thrilled to work with EPIX to give people a first hand view of Milius’ work and the ending to his career which has yet to be written,” said Zak Knutson and Joey Figueroa, Directors and Co-Founders of Chop Shop Entertainment.

EPIX “COMEDY UNBOUND” SUMMER SEASON CONTINUES WITH
TOM PAPA: FREAKED OUT ON JULY 26 @ 10PM ET
AND
JIM NORTON: AMERICAN DEGENERATE ON AUGUST 23 @ 10PM ET

New York, June 27, 2013 — Premium TV network EPIX announced the continuation of the hilarious season of Comedy Unbound that began earlier this month. EPIX will premiere two brand new hour-long specials – Tom Papa: Freaked Out on July 26 and Jim Norton: American Degenerate on August 23. These new programs, along with the rest of the Comedy Unbound showcase, are available exclusively on EPIX, EPIX On Demand, EpixHD.com and EPIX apps across hundreds of devices including Xbox, PS3, Roku, iPads, iPhones and more.

Tom Papa: Freaked Out –Friday, July 26, 2013 at 10PM ET:
For his first EPIX comedy special, and his second hour-long special directed by Rocker/Director Rob Zombie, Tom Papa tackles the hazards of churches, loose change, old age, make-up, raising women, Chinese grocery stores, and magical gnomes. Known for his irreverent appearances on Leno, Letterman and Conan, and for hosting NBC’s “The Marriage Ref”, Papa stands out among his fellow comedians for his optimistic take on the mostly insane world he lives in.

Jim Norton: American Degenerate – Friday, August 23, 2013 at 10PM ET:
Triumphantly returning after his first EPIX comedy special, “Please Be Offended”, Jim Norton continues his self-deprecating humor in his third hour-long stand-up special. Shot in Boston in front of his most hard core fans, Norton leaves nothing embarrassing off the table, skewering a wide range of topics including politics, the media, and, of course, sex. Norton, a New York Times bestselling author, Tonight Show” regular, and the third mic on Sirius/XM’s popular “The Opie and Anthony Show,” performs with the knowledge that some of his remarks will no doubt inspire a wave of self-righteous online complaints by those who are easily offended.

Madonna, along with her seven member band, outstanding troupe of 27 dancers (all clothed in 1500 costumes) and state of the art visuals and sound electrified crowds internationally with what the Material Girl termed “the hardest but most thrilling and challenging show I’ve ever done.”

“My show is a journey…the journey of a soul from darkness to light. It is part cinematic musical theatre – part spectacle and sometimes intimate performance art. It is journey from anger to love and from chaos to order. There are good guys and bad guys to help illustrate this point. Sometimes I play both. It must be watched with an open heart from beginning to end. I am sure if it is viewed this way, you will walk away feeling inspired, invigorated and will want to make the world a better place.” concluded Madonna in describing the show’s intent.

EPIX CEO and President Mark Greenberg commented, “Madonna’s stunning musical performance and show-stopping moves continue to prove that she is truly a timeless entertainer. We launched the EPIX network with Madonna’s previous tour, Sticky and Sweet, premiering the concert the first night that EPIX was on air. We are very excited to have her back on the network.”

The MDNA Show was directed by Danny Tull and Stephane Sennour. Tull has worked with Madonna editing previous shows and her feature film W.E.

Some reviews included:

“Would raise the roof if there were one… another ruthlessly enjoyable show” raved the London’s Sunday Times.

“…Madonna’s back with a vengeance…the Giorgio Moroder-racing “I’m Addicted” secures her crown – still sets the bar soaring…Madonna returns to defy the realms of possibility – our disco Messiah” commented MOJO.

“We are proud to present the best in stand-up acts today and to work with great comedy institutions like the Improv,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO.

The new summer season of Comedy Unbound, airing Fridays at 10 pm, will kick off June 7 with the premiere of former “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Jim Breuer’s one-hour special and will include new specials from Sherri Shepherd, Tom Papa and Jim Norton:

Jim Breuer: And Laughter For All – June 7 @10PM ET:

Breuer, best known as “Goat Boy” and his spot on impersonation of “made man” Joe Pesci during his stint on “Saturday Night Live.” In “Jim Breuer: And Laughter For All,” he grapples with the absurdities and annoyances of finding himself a middle aged father of three in suburban New Jersey.  This is Breuer’s first ever stand-up comedy special for EPIX.

Sherri Shepherd: It’s My Time To Talk – June 21 @10PM ET:

The Emmy award-winning talk show co-host from ABC’s “The View” returns to her roots in stand-up comedy and ruminates on life in her new comedy special, “Sherri Shepherd: It’s My Time To Talk.”  She recounts the experience she had on “Dancing with the Stars” as well as the occasional awkward moments while doing Hot Topics on “The View,” among other off-beat revelations.

Tom Papa: Freaked Out – July 26 @10PM ET:

Known for his irreverent appearances on Leno, Letterman and Conan, and for hosting NBC’s “The Marriage Ref,” Papa stands out among his fellow comedians for his optimistic take on the mostly insane world he lives in.  For his first EPIX comedy special, and his second hour-long special directed by Rocker/Director Rob Zombie, Papa tackles the hazards of churches, loose change, old age, make-up, raising women, Chinese grocery stores and magical gnomes.

Jim Norton: American Degenerate – August 23 @10PM ET:

Triumphantly returning after his first EPIX comedy special, “Please Be Offended,” now airing on Comedy Central, Jim Norton continues his self-deprecating humor with his third hour standup special “Jim Norton: American Degenerate.” In his latest offering, Norton, a New York Times bestselling author, Tonight Show” regular, and the third micon Sirius/XM’s popular “The Opie and Anthony Show,” performs his unfiltered material “Jim Norton: American Degenerate” shot in Boston in front of his most hard core fans. Norton leaves nothing embarrassing off the table, skeweringa wide range of topics including politics, the media, and, of course, sex, with the knowledge that some of his remarks will no doubt inspire a wave of self-righteous online complaints by those who are easily offended.

4/10/13 EPIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY PRESENTS EXPOSE OF COLLEGE SPORTS

Uncovering Shame in College Sports, “Schooled” Will Make Its World Premiere
this Fall on EPIX and All Platforms

New York, NY, April 10, 2013 – Premium network EPIX announced it has secured exclusive rights to a new and timely original documentary examining the business of college football and basketball and the NCAA’s treatment of its athletes.  The expose is based on a controversial 2011 article by Pulitzer Prize winning civil rights scholar, Taylor Branch.  Schooled: The Shame of College Sports will make its world premiere this Fall on the EPIX network and on all platforms including EPIX On Demand, EpixHD.com and EPIX apps on hundreds of devices including Xbox, PS3, Roku, iPads, iPhones and more.

Schooled, based on Branch’s article “The Shame of College Sports”,is a hard-hitting examination weaving interviews, archival and behind-the-scenes footage to tell a story of how college sports became a billion dollar industry built on athletes who are deprived of numerous rights.  Those interviewed include current and former college athletes, coaches, academic advisors, NCAA compliance officers and university administrators, including Emmy-winning Sportscaster Bob Costas, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, Joe Nocera of The New York Times, Dave Zirin of The Nation, Sports Illustrated’s Frank Deford, George Dohrmann, BJ Schecter and Michael Rosenberg.

When first published in The Atlantic in October 2011, the article set off a firestorm of controversy and admiration. Sports Illustrated’s Frank Deford said Branch’s story “may well be the most important article ever written about college sports.”  Branch, who also appears in the documentary, argues that decades of greed and self-interest have finally caught up with the NCAA and that the organization is poised to collapse under the weight of its own hypocrisy.

“Branch’s expose gives us an inside look at the injustice done to these dedicated young athletes and it sheds a new light on all college sports programs,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO.  “EPIX is committed to bringing controversial stories like this to our viewers.”

The documentary is directed by Ross Finkel, Jon Paley and Trevor Martin (directors of Ballplayer: Pelotero); executive produced by Bobby Valentine; produced by Andrew J. Muscato, Taylor Branch, and former college and NFL player Domonique Foxworth.

Says producer Andrew Muscato, “Over the past year and a half, we’ve assembled an unprecedented, comprehensive and compelling look at the culture of big-time college sports in America.  Bobby and I are excited that EPIX shares our fascination with this subject, and we’re especially thrilled that they’ll be bringing our film to their audience in time for the next football season.”
