New York, NY (June 2, 2014) – EPIX, the premium entertainment network, announced today that the premiere of a new 30-minute special series, “Personal with Bill Rhoden,” will air on Wednesday, June 11 at 8pm ET with a pair of America’s most elite athletes and personalities, NFL Hall-of-Famer Calvin Hill and his son, recently retired NBA superstar Grant Hill.  Recorded last month in Atlanta, the show will touch on many of the current topics in American sports, from the Donald Sterling situation to race relations and the changing views and acceptance of the LGBT community to the on-going issues professional athletes and men of color face in society today.   In the discussion, Grant talks frankly about his dealing with Sterling and the challenges of being a professional athlete today, while Calvin gives his unique perspective on the same issues from the vantage point of both a parent and a legendary star in the NFL.  Bill Rhoden, an award-winning sports journalist with The New York Times, conducts the up close and intimate interview.

Grant Hill was a seven time All-Star during an 18 year NBA career with the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers following an All-America career at Duke University, where he helped lead the Blue Devils to a pair of NCAA Titles. Calvin Hill was a four-time Pro Bowl selection during a 13-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns after a standout career as a collegian at Yale University. They also have the unique tie of being a father/son combination to have both been named Rookie of the Year in their respective sports, Calvin in 1969-70 and Grant in 1994 – 95. More importantly than their work on the field was the respect both have gained in the business world and in their personal lives as role models and mentors to people of all ages, creeds and color.

Personal with Bill Rhoden” is a give and take between two generations of elite athletes, as each plays off Rhoden’s questions on the world we live in today and where athletes and race factor into bigger discussions in society. Calvin Hill touches on the issues he faced in the segregated south and how he has had to adjust some of his views as the world has evolved with a new-found social acceptance of people from diverse backgrounds, while Grant Hill expounds upon the use of social media as a tool for athletes to have a voice today, his reaction to the goings-on around the LA Clippers (which he is purportedly involved with one of the bidding groups), and the new-found consciousness of the American athlete in the world today, among other topics.

The EPIX Original Documentary, which premiered in October 2013, examines the provocative issues surrounding the business of college sports and the NCAA’s treatment of its athletes.  Pulitzer Prize winning civil rights scholar, Taylor Branch, bases the exposé on a controversial 2011 article that ran in The Atlantic “The Shame of College Sports”.  Narrated by actor Sam Rockwell, the documentary weaves interviews, archival and behind-the-scenes footage to tell the story of how college sports has become a billion dollar industry built on athletes who are robbed of monetary privileges.  Those interviewed include: former college and NFL player and president of the NFL Players Association Domonique Foxworth (also now attending the Harvard Business School), UCLA star and NBA player Ed O’Bannon, former University of Tennessee All-American and star running back for the Houston Texans Arian Foster, former UCLA standout now Green Bay Packers running back Johnathan Franklin, former UCLA punter now member of the Minnesota Vikings Jeff Locke and former University of North Carolina fullback Devon Ramsay, whose eligibility case was one of the most controversial in recent NCAA history. Also interviewed for the film are Emmy-winning sportscaster Bob Costas, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, New York Times reporter Joe Nocera and Dave Zirin of The Nation.  Sports Illustrated reporters Frank Deford, George Dohrmann, BJ Schecter and Michael Rosenberg join them; and longtime college sports marketing innovator Sonny Vaccaro as well as University of North Carolina educator Mary Willingham are also featured in the film.

Since 2007, Miller has been heard daily on his Westwood One national radio talk show and is a regular contributor for “The O’Reilly Factor” on the FOX News Channel.  Miller is a five-time Emmy® Award winner for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show “Dennis Miller Live” which ran for nine years.  He garnered three Writer’s Guild of America Awards for the series as well as an additional WGA Award for his special, “Dennis Miller: Citizen Arcane.” He was also the “Weekend Update” correspondent on “Saturday Night Live” for six years.

Black was the host of Comedy Central’s “Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil” and makes regular appearances on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”  Lewis Black: Old Yeller – Live at the Borgata is his ninth comedy special and the third show to air on EPIX. “Lewis Black: In God We Trust” aired on EPIX in 2012 and “Lewis Black: Basic Black” ran in 2010.

The launch will deliver thousands of movies and original programs including documentaries, concerts and comedy specials to Time Warner Cable customers across four new channels:  EPIX, EPIX 2 and EPIX 3 plus EPIX Drive-in.  To celebrate the launch, Time Warner Cable will be treating its digital basic tier customers to three months of EPIX, including its multi-plex services, as part of a special introductory offer.

Inspirational Film Follows Athletes who are Disabled as they Explore Freedom of Movement in Water

This one-hour inspirational documentary follows athletes with disabilities as they explore a newfound freedom of movement through water sports such as scuba diving, surfing, and swimming with dolphins.  The film features French explorer, environmentalist and educator Jean-Michel Cousteau and his son Fabien, lifelong champions of the healing power of the world’s oceans.

Individuals featured in the documentary include athletes, public figures and athlete ambassadors such as: renowned “soul surfer” Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark, but now surfs professionally; world record swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin; NCAA Wrestling champ and ESPY winner Anthony Robles, who was born without his right leg; adventurer Grant Korgan, the first adaptive athlete to ski 80 miles in the South Pole; Afghanistan veteran Jesse Murphree, who underwent dual-leg amputations above the knees, but has since re-learned how to ski; and London Paralympics swimming gold medalistMallory Weggemann.
