James Purefoy stars in PENNYWORTH season two as “Captain Troy,” Alfie’s former SAS Captain. Gulliver Troy is a charismatic, cultured brute and a powerful man of appetites – whether that be drink, women or danger.


James Purefoy is best known for playing Mark Antony in the award-winning HBO series Rome (2007/8) and Joe Carroll in the acclaimed series The Following (2012-2015) opposite Kevin Bacon. Other credits include his role of King George VI in Churchill (2017) opposite Brian Cox and Pangbourne in High-Rise (2015) the feature adaptation of the classic JG Ballard novel, directed by Ben Wheatley. Recent TV credits include playing Hap in Hap & Leonard (Sundance TV), Altered Carbon (Netflix), Sex Education (Netflix) together with El Candidato (Amazon) and Fertile Crescent (Hulu) both to be broadcast in 2020. He is currently working on A Discovery Of Witches (Sky1) and Pennyworth (Epix).

 

Film credits include Chris Foggin’s Fisherman’s Friends, Stephen Campanelli’s action thriller, Momentum (2015) opposite Olga Kurylenko, Wicked Blood (2014) opposite Sean Bean and Abigail Breslin as well as Solomon Kane (2010), Ironclad (2011) and John Carter (2012).

 

Other prominent film credits include starring in the first instalment of Resident Evil (2002), playing Rawdon Crawley in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair (2004) opposite Reese Witherspoon and also Edward, the Black Prince, in A Knight’s Tale (2001) alongside Heath Ledger.

 

He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in his final year at the Central School of Speech and Drama and spent six years in lead roles in the UK theatre. He last starred on stage in FlarePath opposite Sienna Miller at the Haymarket Theatre directed by Trevor Nunn.

 

Purefoy hails from Taunton, England.
