TV EVERYWHERE: IT’S ALL ABOUT MILLENNIALS

TV Everywhere: It’s All About Millennials

New survey from Altman Vilandrie & Company and EPIX shows pay TV can attract younger consumers with TVE, but awareness remains low

BOSTON, MA – October 14, 2015TV Everywhere (TVE) could entice more millennials to subscribe to pay television services if awareness of the opportunity to watch movies and TV shows on multiple devices grows, according to a new annual survey of multiplatform video viewing trends released today by strategy consulting firm Altman Vilandrie & Company and premium entertainment network EPIX.

While the percentage of occupied U.S. TV households without pay TV service—now about 17%—is continuing to increase, millennials (ages 18-34) are significantly less likely to subscribe (72%) than consumers over 35 (86%). Millennial consumers represent just 20% of pay TV subscribers but make up 37% of consumers who have either dropped their multichannel video subscription (“cord-cutters”) or eschew pay TV altogether (“cord-nevers”).

However, the survey data reveals that TVE could help curb cord-cutting, as younger millennials (18-24 year-old subscribers) are 23% less likely to explore TV alternatives or to switch providers if they know their video provider offers TVE than if they think the service is not available. For subscribers unaware that their provider offers TVE, more than half (55%) of young millennials and 48% of older millennials (25-34 year-olds) say they would use TVE at least once a month if their provider offered it. Additionally, a majority (54%) of young millennials and 47% of older millennials who do not have multichannel video service agree that they would be more likely to consider subscribing to pay TV if they could watch content on devices other than their TVs.

Consumer awareness of the ability to watch programs on devices other than a TV, typically through apps provided free to subscribers, remains persistently low at 36%, with little difference among pay TV subscribers by age. For 18-24 year-old subscribers aware of TVE, 7 in 10 say they use the service monthly — more than the 57% of older millennials and well above the 43% of all multichannel video subscribers aware of TV Everywhere.

“Young viewers tend to be mobile device viewers and the survey shows that the best way for pay TV operators to capture and retain those consumers is through TV Everywhere,” said Jonathan Hurd, the Altman Vilandrie & Company director who led the survey.  “However, providers need to do a much better job of promoting TV Everywhere and driving its usage or risk continued erosion of subscribers, especially millennials.”

The study also finds that subscribers to EPIX, which is available on hundreds of mobile and connected devices, are significantly more aware of TVE offerings at 61% (70% higher than the national average). These viewers also confirm the trend: Those aware of TVE are more likely (81% vs. 72%) to say that they will definitely or probably not discontinue their multichannel video service over the next six months than subscribers unaware of TVE.

“From the beginning, TV Everywhere has been a core pillar of our business, knowing consumers want to watch content when they want, where they want and how they want,” said Mark Greenberg, president and CEO of EPIX. “We’re excited that the findings of this study highlight how important TVE offerings are to the pay TV landscape in maintaining subscribers and growing viewership.”

The survey also found that video viewing on mobile devices is particularly high among millennials. Almost half (46%) of millennials report using their smartphones and/or tablets to watch movies or TV shows at least weekly compared to 38% of all mobile device owners.

Other findings from the survey include:

  • Multichannel video subscribers aware of TVE are much more likely to use their provider’s on-demand service weekly to watch movies (32% vs. 20%) and TV shows (44% vs. 27%) than those who are unaware
  • Among all weekly TVE users, millennials are at least twice as likely as consumers over 35 to use TVE to view movies (38% vs. 16%), live TV shows (30% vs. 15%) pre-recorded TV shows (33% vs. 15%) and live sports (31% vs. 12%)
  • When asked why they subscribe to pay TV, consumers aware that their provider offers TVE are much more likely to identify the choice and convenience provided by TVE as a reason to subscribe, including:
    • I can watch it according to my own timetable, whenever I want (#1 reason)
    • I can watch on devices other than my TV
    • I can watch it away from home (e.g. laptop, mobile phone, tablet).

The survey, conducted by Altman Vilandrie & Company since 2010 and co-sponsored this year by EPIX, also analyzed pay TV subscribership, online video usage, mobile viewing, multitasking and binge-watching. Key portions of this analysis are available to media by request.

Altman Vilandrie & Company fielded the online survey in July among more than 3,400 U.S. consumers. For details about further research topics and more information about the study, contact Jonathan Hurd at jhurd@altvil.com.

EPIX ANNOUNCES RICHARD ARMITAGE FOR LEAD AND MICHELLE FORBES AS NEWEST ADDITIONS TO THE CAST OF BERLIN STATION – THE NETWORK’S ORIGINAL SPY SERIES

EPIX ANNOUNCES RICHARD ARMITAGE FOR LEAD AND MICHELLE FORBES AS NEWEST ADDITIONS TO THE CAST OF BERLIN STATION – THE NETWORK’S ORIGINAL SPY SERIES

A Modern-day Thriller Produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content – Debuts Fall 2016

New York, NY – September 11, 2015 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today that Richard Armitage (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, “Hannibal”) has been cast as the lead in Berlin Station, the 10-part contemporary spy series produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content.  Armitage will portray Daniel Meyer, the cerebral, newly-anointed CIA case officer who goes from being an analyst at Langley to an undercover agent in Berlin tasked with finding an informant. Also joining the ensemble cast is Emmy® Award nominee Michelle Forbes (“The Killing,” “True Blood,” The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2) in the role of Valerie Edwards, the no-nonsense administrator who serves as a Berlin Station Section Head.

Previously announced castings include: Academy Award® nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) as Steven Frost, a veteran of the Cold War who serves as the CIA’s Chief of the Berlin Station; and BAFTA Award-winner Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1, “Elementary,” Notting Hill) as Case Officer Hector DeJean, the darkly charming, tenacious agent who mentors Meyer.

Michaël Roskam (BullheadThe Drop) will executive produce the straight-to-series order and direct the first two episodes.  New York Times best-selling spy novelist Olen Steinhauer (The TouristAll The Old Knives, The Cairo Affair), who wrote the first episode, will write and executive produce the series. Brad Winters (“Dig,” “The Americans,” “Boss,” “Oz”) is serving as the showrunner and will executive produce. Other executive producers for the series include Academy Award® winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The InsiderMunich, “House of Cards”), and Steve Golin, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Keith Redmon and Luke Rivett from Anonymous Content (“True Detective,” “The Knick,” “Mr. Robot”).

“We are very happy to have found our ‘Daniel’ to join this incredible ensemble cast,” said Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO of EPIX.  “Richard is a singular talent who has the presence and attitude to bring this character and story to life.  We are also honored that Michelle has joined Berlin Station.  She is a gifted actor who embodies the richness of character pivotal to the show.  This venture is an exciting step in the network’s continued commitment to bringing our viewers smart, sophisticated offerings that have a broad appeal.”

“Both Richard and Michelle are enormously talented actors who exhibit an on-screen intensity and passion that viewers respond to because of their intellect and ability to let transformation overcome their characters,” said Amy Powell, President, Paramount TV.  “We are honored to have them join this stellar cast and that they will be taking on these intricate roles.”

Production on the series is scheduled to begin this Fall and premiere on EPIX in Fall 2016.

Berlin Station follows Daniel Meyer, who has just arrived at the CIA foreign station in Berlin, Germany. Meyer has a clandestine mission: to uncover the source of a leak who has supplied information to a now-famous whistleblower named “Thomas Shaw.”  Guided by jaded veteran Hector DeJean, Daniel learns to contend with the rough-and-tumble world of the field agent—agent-running, deception, the dangers and moral compromises. As he dives deeper into the German capital’s hall of mirrors and uncovers the threads of a conspiracy that leads back to Washington, Daniel wonders: Can anyone ever be the same after a posting to Berlin?

Richard Armitage boasts a diverse resume in film, television and the stage, gaining momentum on UK shows including “MI-5”’ and “Robin Hood.” He achieved international recognition with his performance in the 2011 box office smash ‘Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving before following it up with his iconic performance as ‘Thorin’ in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, which has grossed over $1 billion to date.

Armitage’s other recent leading roles include John Swetnam’s Into the Storm for New Line, alongside Sarah Wayne Callie and Jeremy Sumpter, as well as Elliot Lester’s independent feature, Sleepwalker, opposite Ahna O’Reilly. This spring, Richard was seen in a recurring role on NBC’s “Hannibal” and just wrapped shooting in Ireland and Belgium for Pilgrimage opposite Tom Holland.

Armitage also returned to the stage this year, delivering a critically acclaimed performance as the lead of Arthur Miller’s modern drama, The Crucible, at the Old Vic Theatre.

Armitage is represented by WME, the law firm Sloane, Offer, Webber and Dern, LLP and Management 360.

Michelle Forbes’ recent portrayal of a grief-stricken mother in the AMC series “The Killing” earned her an Emmy® nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Prior to that, Forbes starred in the groundbreaking Alan Ball series “True Blood” for HBO. Additionally, she starred as Kate Weston in the HBO series “In Treatment,” opposite Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest.

Forbes can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 for Lionsgate and just completed a one-season role in the A&E drama series “The Returned” (based on the hugely popular French series “Les Revenants”) from executive producers Carlton Cuse and Raelle Tucker.

Forbes also recurs in the acclaimed BBC series “Orphan Black” opposite Tatiana Maslany.

Forbes is represented by UTA.

EPIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY DOPED: THE DIRTY SIDE OF SPORTS UNMASKS THE DARK REALITY OF BANNED SUBSTANCE TESTING

EPIX ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY DOPED: THE DIRTY SIDE OF SPORTS UNMASKS

THE DARK REALITY OF BANNED SUBSTANCE TESTING

World Television Premiere Airs Wednesday, September 30 at 8PM ET/PT, 7C

From the Conflicts of USADA to the Ongoing Anti-Doping Challenges in Olympic and Professional Sports

As Seen through the Eyes of Elite Athletes

New York, NY – September 9, 2015 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today that its newest one-hour Original Documentary Doped: The Dirty Side of Sports, which offers a timely and critical look at the history of anti-doping policies in professional sports, will premiere Wednesday, September 30 at 8PM ET/PT, 7C.  The film is executive produced by Bobby Valentine (former MLB Manager, current athletic director of Sacred Heart University), produced and directed by Andrew J. Muscato (“Schooled: The Price of College Sports,” Checkmates) and narrated by Nick Kroll (“Kroll Show,” “The League”).

The documentary features the inspiring first-hand accounts of athletes who claim their professional careers have been unfairly impacted by ineffective drug testing or intrusive testing protocols. Interviewed are record-setting 2015 World Championship bronze medalist and 2016 United States Olympic sprint sensation Tori Bowie, track coach Philippe DeRosier, former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi and shot put champion Adam Nelson, who claimed his rightfully-earned 2004 Olympics gold medal after a retroactive testing of his Ukrainian competitor confirmed the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Doped: The Dirty Side of Sports presents the many controversies and conflicts surrounding anti-doping policies and implementation along with archival and vérité footage that tell the story of a system that has trouble catching the cheaters. The film also reveals more about what the MLB Commissioner did and did not know about the steroid scandal in baseball through the first-ever public interview with former MLB investigator Ed Dominguez.

“EPIX strives to present relevant and thought-provoking programming that not only entertains but also informs,” said Mark S. Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO. “The topic of doping is a hot-button issue that continues to spark pointed conversation throughout the sports universe. This documentary offers a compelling look at the efforts to create fairness in testing, while shedding light on the surprising personal stories of everyday athletes.”

Doped: The Dirty Side of Sports also includes conversations with current and former representatives of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) as well as Victor Conte (former BALCO CEO), Armond Armstead (former USC Football player), David Epstein (bestselling author, The Sports Gene), David Howman (WADA Director General), Dick Pound (former WADA President), DeMaurice Smith (Executive Director, NFL Players Association), Renee Anne Shirley (former Executive Director, Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission), ESPN’s T.J. QuinnVice’s Patrick Hruby, noted boxing writer Thomas Hauser and many others.

“The policies used in sports for the war on performance enhancing drugs overreach and underperform,” said Andrew J. Muscato, Producer and Director of the documentary.  “Amazingly clean athletes are not only being harmed by these rules, but they have no say in how to improve what’s clearly a broken system. In order for a global gold standard to truly work, athletes should be a bigger part of the process and that is how we can get to a better and more amicable solution for all. This is a big issue we discuss in the film.”

Series Created by Joshua Michael Stern and Produced by Lionsgate to Debut Autumn 2016

Skylar Astin will play Isaiah Miller, a neurotic, over-eager assistant who goes to work for his political hero President Richard Graves at the very moment that the ex-POTUS is tearing down his own legacy. Angélica María will play Ramona Alvarez, the wry housekeeper who has worked for President Graves since before he was elected President and as a result, grown comically desensitized to the daily dramas unfolding in the Graves household. They join previously announced Nolte and Sarandon who star as former President Graves and FLOTUS Margaret Graves. The storyline takes place 25 years after the end of their term, and Graves has the epiphany that his policies have damaged the country for decades.  So, with his young assistant Isaiah, he embarks on a Don Quixote-like journey to right the wrongs of his administration just as his wife, Margaret, decides to follow her own political ambitions.

Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) created the project and will write and executive produce the 10-episode series.  Stern will also direct select episodes. Oscar®-winning producer Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker), Keith Eisner (The Good Wife) and Eric Weinberg (Anger Management) are also executive producers. Production on the series is scheduled to begin this fall and premiere on EPIX in Autumn 2016.
