EPIX SERVES UP ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY ‘SERENA

SET TO MAKE ITS WORLD TELEVISION PREMIERE ON JUNE 22, 2016 at 8PM ET/PT, 7C

New York, NY – March 9, 2016 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today that the EPIX Original Documentary Serena, an intimate portrait of 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist and International sports icon Serena Williams, will make its World Television Premiere on EPIX on June 22, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT, 7C. The feature-length documentary provides viewers with unprecedented access inside the world of the athlete-designer-businesswoman, including day-in-the-life interactions with her family and friends, plus her most trusted colleagues and fiercest competitors. Shot verité style – Serena explores the pressures that come with being number one in the world, and Williams unflinching commitment and drive to succeed, ultimately emphasizing the humanity under all of her accomplishments.

Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO of EPIX, said: “Serena is a personal journey during which we are privileged to follow one woman’s incredible march to achieve a level of greatness that so few tennis players have achieved in the history of the sport. The film presents us with a captivating vision of this world-class athlete while offering the viewer rare insight into what makes Serena Williams the person she is beyond the court. Serena transcends the world of tennis and is sure to fascinate viewers across the country.”

Remarked Serena Williams: “2015 was a defining time in my life and career. I think my story will be relatable to audiences whether you love tennis or not. It’s a story of perseverance, failure and triumph. It’s the most intimate I’ve ever allowed myself to be on film. It was a scary but ultimately really gratifying experience, which I’m hoping inspires others to pursue their dreams. I’m really grateful to EPIX for this incredible opportunity and the care they’ve shown me. Can’t wait for you all to see it.”

For Serena, the documentary team was provided unparalleled access. Viewers will be witness to the external pressures and vulnerabilities Williams faces in her quest to achieve four Grand Slams in a row (a “Serena Slam”), and her losses at the 2015 U.S. Open and 2016 Australian Open. In addition, the film takes an unprecedented look at Williams’ life off the court as the filmmakers capture intimate and unguarded moments with her family and inner circle of coaches, trainers and friends.

EPIX ACQUIRES HARD-HITTING BREAKOUT SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL DOCUMENTARY

“UNDER THE GUN”

EXECUTIVE PRODUCED & NARRATED BY KATIE COURIC AND DIRECTED BY STEPHANIE SOECHTIG

An Official Selection at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, the Documentary Explores America’s Gun Violence Problem Through the Eyes of Victims’ Families and Gun Rights Advocates

Airs May 15, 2016 as Part of the EPIX Free Preview Weekend

New York, February 18, 2016 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today it has secured exclusive rights in the U.S. and Canada to Atlas Films’ Under the Gun, a provocative new documentary from Katie Couric (Executive producer and narrator of the 2014 documentary Fed Up, Yahoo Global News Anchor, best-selling author) and Stephanie Soechtig (Fed Up, Tapped) that presents a balanced look at the gun debate. The feature length documentary, which received significant praise and attention at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, makes its World Television Premiere on EPIX and across all EPIX platforms on May 15 at 8pm ET/PT, 7C during the EPIX Free Preview Weekend (May 12-15). EPIX is collaborating with the filmmakers on a robust social marketing campaign that will include an expansive grassroots program designed to mobilize affinity groups across the country through a series of local market screenings and town hall events.

Lionsgate will coordinate the release of Under the Gun in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles, as well as manage digital distribution on platforms including Electronic Sell-Through and Transactional Video on Demand. Lionsgate has also acquired Canadian rights.

In Under the Gun, Couric and Soechtig—the team responsible for Fed Up, which looked at the food industry and the alarming spread of childhood obesity—examine why, despite the increase in deaths at the hands of guns and the outpouring of shock and outrage that comes with it, our nation has failed to respond with meaningful action. What is keeping the two sides of this debate—those favoring stricter gun control laws and Second Amendment purists like the NRA—from finding common ground? Through the lens of families impacted by the mass shootings in Newtown, Aurora, Isla Vista and Tucson, as well as daily gun violence in Chicago, the film examines why our national politicians are refusing to act and what is being done at the state and local levels.

Subjects and organizations featured in the documentary include: Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly (Americans for Responsible Solutions); Jackie and Mark Barden (Sandy Hook Promise); Sandy and Lonnie Phillips (Jessi’s Message); John Feinblatt and Richard Martinez (Everytown for Gun Safety); Victoria Montgomery (Open Carry Texas); Shannon Watts (Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America); Pamela and Tom Bosley (Purpose Over Pain); The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Law Center To Prevent Gun Violence.

Mark S. Greenberg, President & CEO of EPIX, said: “During this Presidential election year, we at EPIX want to contribute to the national dialogue on the major issues affecting our country today. I can think of no more pressing subject than gun violence, and I am extremely proud to bring Under the Gun to EPIX viewers. The gun debate, with its core issues of gun rights and gun violence, is one of the most polarizing taking place in our society today. In Under the Gun, Katie and Stephanie bring their dynamic talent and perspective to this complex, multi-faceted issue and present honest, unbiased, and thoughtful commentary to this subject that has real life or death consequences.”

Katie Couric said: “I’ve covered mass shootings and gun violence throughout my career, but following the massacre at Sandy Hook, I was confused by the disconnect between public opinion (over 90% of Americans supported universal background checks) and public policy. I hope this film will help people have a better understanding of how we got to this point. Now is the time for a truly informed, rational conversation about gun violence and I’m thrilled EPIX and Lionsgate are committed to making this film available to the widest audience possible so we can do just that.”

Stephanie Soechtig said: “We are pleased to make EPIX the home for Under the Gun. As both filmmakers and citizens who are deeply concerned about this issue, it was important for us that our film be seen by the widest possible audience. EPIX showed a unique willingness and commitment to make Under the Gun available to the entire country—for free—by premiering it during EPIX’s nationwide free preview. Making our film available to anyone with an Internet connection was something that no service or network other than EPIX was willing to do. Their belief in this cause, and the passion that they bring to it, made them the obvious choice for Katie and me.”

The filmmakers decided not to mention the names, nor show the photos, of any shooters.

Key facts explored in Under the Gun include:

  • Gun violence is the second leading cause of death among children aged 10-19 in the U.S.
(Source: Children’s Defense Fund — the first leading cause is unintentional injuries/accidents)
  • 93% of Americans support requiring background checks for all gun buyers, including 84% of gun owners and 74% of NRA members. (Sources: Quinnipiac, 2015 and John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, 2013)
  • 90% of guns used in crimes can reportedly be traced back to just 5% of gun dealers.
    (Source: Brady Campaign)
  • The manufacture and distribution of teddy bears is more tightly regulated for health and safety than handguns.

Under the Gun is produced by Atlas Films in association with Carellie Productions and directed by Stephanie Soechtig. Katie Couric, Regina K. Scully, Michael Walrath and Michelle Walrath are the executive producers. Olivia Ahnemann, Joshua Kunau, Kristin Lazure and Soechtig are the producers. The screenplay is by Mark Monroe, Brian Lazarte and Soechtig. The director of photography is Josh Salzman, the editor is Brian Lazarte and music is by Brian Tyler. Katie Couric is the narrator.

The Guardian: “Absorbing and gripping, this documentary details the rise of the NRA into a lobbying powerhouse – and provides an incentive to get involved in the debate.”

VarietyCutting through political talking points to focus on facts and firsthand accounts, “Under the Gun” is an essential primer on the rise of gun violence in the U.S.”

EPIX TO AIR “THE 4%: FILM’S GENDER PROBLEM”

EPIX TO AIR “THE 4%: FILM’S GENDER PROBLEM”

AN ORIGINAL SERIES OF 6 SHORT DOCUMENTARIES WITH FIRST PERSON INSIGHTS, ABOUT GENDER INEQUALITY IN HOLLYWOOD DEBUTS MARCH 8, ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2016

Produced by Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, Directed by Caroline Suh and Featuring Interviews with Jill Soloway, Paul Feig, Toni Collette, Anjelica Huston, Catherine Hardwicke,

Judd Apatow, Amy Heckerling, Julie Delpy, Lake Bell, Mira Nair, Amanda Peet,

Patricia Clarkson, Mo’Nique, Anne Sweeney, James Franco,

Amber Tamblyn, Christine Vachon, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Kristin Wiig and more…

Informed by Research Conducted by USC Annenberg Professor, Dr. Stacy L. Smith

NEW YORK, NY – JANUARY 25, 2016 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today that THE 4%: FILM’S GENDER PROBLEM, a series of 6 original short films designed to explore the issues around the current gender gap in Hollywood has completed production.  The 6 shorts will air on the network and across all EPIX platforms on International Women’s Day – March 8, 2016 – and run throughout the month, coinciding with Women’s History Month. The first short will be presented at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival’s “Women at Sundance Brunch” on January 25.

Produced by Alex Gibney’s award-winning Jigsaw Productions (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, Taxi To the Darkside, Enron: Smartest Men In the Room), the series spotlights directors and creative personalities – both women and men – who share first-person insights, questions and anecdotes about the role of women in Hollywood.

Participants include: Judd Apatow, Joe Arcidiacono, Lake Bell, Amy Berg, Patricia Clarkson, Toni Collette, Jonathan Dayton, Julie Delpy, Valerie Faris, Paul Feig, America Ferrera, James Franco, Donna Gigliotti, Geoffrey Gilmore, Debra Granik, Catherine Hardwicke, Mary Harron, Amy Heckerling, Dawn Hudson, Anjelica Huston, Vicky Jenson, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Rebecca Keegan, Jon Kilik, Ellen Kuras, Mimi Leder, Franklin Leonard, Tina Mabry, Victoria Mahoney, Michael Mann, Lori McCreary, Mo’Nique, Michael Moore, Rachel Morrison, Mira Nair, Amanda Peet, Kimberly Peirce, Keri Putnam, Pamela Romanowsky, Cathy Schulman, A.O. Scott, Melissa Silverstein, Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Jill Soloway, Anne Sweeney, Amber Tamblyn, Anne Thompson, Rosemarie Troche, Christine Vachon, Mandy Walker and Kristen Wiig.

The series is informed by research conducted by USC Annenberg’s, Dr. Stacy L. Smith a renowned expert in the field, and which was supported by Women in Film Los Angeles and Sundance Institute. The series also has the support of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender In Media and Meryl Streep.

Even though it is widely recognized that female directors are strikingly under-represented in Hollywood, the numbers still manage to surprise.  According to a multi-year study led by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and conducted by the USC Annenberg Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative, across 1,300 top-grossing films from 2002 to 2014, only 4.1% of all directors were female.  This calculates into a gender ratio of 23.3 male directors to every 1 female director.

Each film will focus on a different theme, with segments varying in tone – from thoughtful, to controversial, to funny, sometimes all at once.

Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO, EPIX said, “EPIX has supported Stacy’s research for years and these shorts offer a richer, more authentic portrayal about the role of women and girls in media today. Support for this project has also brought together the talented Alex Gibney, and a prestigious list of some of the most gifted artists and creatives from the worlds of entertainment and the arts. Our objective is to help provide a forum for the discussion of ideas and potential solutions, as we collectively work towards closing the gap that exists today.”

Dr. Stacy L. Smith, the Initiative’s Founder and Director and lead researcher on the investigation, said, “The series offers an opportunity for a national audience to hear from the entertainment industry directly about the issues women face both as filmmakers and in other creative roles. My research is clear: females face a very real fiscal cliff as they pursue work at the highest echelons of this industry. I am proud that my research is associated with a team and a network that cares about female filmmakers and creating systemic change.”

According to research from Dr. Stacy L. Smith:

  • In the 100 top films of 2014, only 2 women worked as directors.
  • Across 700 films and 779 directors from 2007 to 2014, only 3 were Black or African American female directors.
  • Women were only 11% of writers and less than 20% of producers across the 100 top-grossing films of 2014.
  • Only 30% of all on-screen speaking characters in 700 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2014 were girls or women.
  • A total of 21 of the 100 top films of 2014 featured a female lead or roughly equal co-lead.
  • Less than a quarter of all speaking characters were female in the top animated films of 2014.
  • Only 22% of speaking characters in top action/adventure films of 2014 were female.
  • 34% of characters in top 2014 comedies were female.

Other data on female directors shows:

  • Only four women have been nominated for a Best Director Oscar® in the past 85 years, with only one winner among them.

THE 4%: FILM’S GENDER PROBLEM points to the fact there is an undeniably gaping disparity in Hollywood. It’s one that many – including those in Hollywood and at the ACLU and EEOC – believe needs to change. What better way to draw attention to the issue than to have some of the business’ most recognizable voices come together in support of more diversity in making movies,” notes director Caroline Suh. “I’m very happy that the project found a partner in Jigsaw, a company known for its activism in exploring human rights violations and the abuse of power. Jigsaw is an amazing group of diverse yet like-minded people whom I’ve loved working with. Further pleased to be working with the support of EPIX, led by Mark Greenberg, who has been committed to these issues for a long time. There’s also a great team of executives and production people who have rallied around the cause.”

THE 4%: FILM’S GENDER PROBLEM is a series of EPIX Original short documentary films produced by Jigsaw Productions.  Caroline Suh is the director and Erika Frankel is the producer. Executive Producers are Stacey Offman, Laura Michalchyshyn, Lynne Kirby, Caroline Suh, Betsy West and Alex Gibney. Jocelyn Diaz, Ross Bernard and Jill Burkhart are Executive Producers for EPIX.

America Divided will make its World Television Premiere on EPIX in Fall 2016 in the run-up to the presidential election.

“EPIX is committed to presenting thought-provoking documentaries that deal head-on with hot-button topics that affect our society,” said Mark S. Greenberg, CEO & President of EPIX. “America Divided is a nonpartisan investigation of the key issues shaping the presidential campaign, and we are confident our viewers will find each episode compelling and accessible.”

“This series cuts to the heart of the inequality crisis, exploring life-and-death struggles around the economic, social and political divide,” said the show creators. “Our aim is to expose the damage extreme inequality inflicts on all Americans, reveal its systemic causes, and celebrate real-world heroes fighting for solutions.”

America Divided will feature high-profile correspondents exploring aspects of inequality related to their own biographies. Oscar®-winning hip-hop artist Common returns to his hometown of Chicago — ground zero for disparities in the criminal justice system. Emmy®– and Golden Globe®-winning actress America Ferrera travels to Texas to witness battles around access to the ballot and healthcare for poor women. Actor and comedian Zach Galifianakis investigates the political landscape in his home state of North Carolina and considers how it’s emblematic of the country’s deepening political divide during the 2016 campaign. Legendary TV producer Norman Lear, an original member of the Television Academy Hall of Fame, reports on the housing crisis in New York — from people who have no homes to luxury apartments purposely kept vacant. Actress and producer Amy Poehler witnesses the complex challenges faced by domestic workers who maintain an intimate relationship with the families that employ them while also struggling for better conditions. Actor and activist Peter Sarsgaard explores the addiction crisis ravaging a heartland beset by unemployment and the shuttering of America’s factories. And, “Grey’s Anatomy” star and former teacher Jesse Williams goes back to the classroom and becomes immersed in the battle to fix inequality in education.

“Addressing the ramifications of inequality, is hugely important to me,” said executive producer and correspondent Common. “The more we explore the subject and build a dialog around the issues, the more we can do to create change.”

“Foremost among the Founding Fathers’ promises was equality under the law,” reflected Norman Lear, who is also serving as an executive producer and correspondent. “It’s up to us to help them keep their promise.”

“The promise of the American dream was a united country where everyone is treated equal,” said executive producer Shonda Rhimes.  “That promise has clearly been broken; all you have to do is look around to see that our reality has been built on the back of inequality.  It’s my hope that this series will inspire audiences to be part of a change that leads us into a stronger, more equal future.”

America Divided, is an EPIX Original Documentary series produced by Divided Films in association with RadicalMedia. Norman Lear (“All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons”), Common (Selma, John Wick 2) and Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal”) are the executive producers along with the co-creators Solly Granatstein (“Years Of Living Dangerously,” “60 Minutes”), Lucian Read (“Years of Living Dangerously,” 99%) and Richard Rowley (Dirty Wars, “Years of Living Dangerously”).  Jon Kamen (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, The Fog of War), Dave O’Connor (You Don’t Know Bo, Whitey: The United States v. James J. Bulger) and Justin Wilkes (What Happened, Miss Simone?, Under African Skies) are executive producers for RadicalMedia. Nicole Dow and Derek Dudley (Freedom Road Productions), and Brent Miller (Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You) are co-executive producers. Solly Granatstein, Lucian Read and Richard Rowley also serve as directors. Rebecca Teitel (Hate in America, Hubris) and Jesse Williams (Farword Films) are senior producers. Abby Ellis and Leah Natasha Thomas are producers. EPIX ANNOUNCES START OF PRODUCTION FOR ORIGINAL SPY SERIES ‘BERLIN STATION’

EPIX ANNOUNCES START OF PRODUCTION FOR ORIGINAL SPY SERIES ‘BERLIN STATION’

Ensemble Cast Stars Richard Armitage, Rhys Ifans, Richard Jenkins and Michelle Forbes

The Modern-Day Thriller, Produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content Debuts Fall 2016

New York, NY – November 13, 2015 – Premium TV network EPIX® announced today that production has started on Berlin Station, the 10-part contemporary spy series produced by Paramount TV and Anonymous Content. Shooting will take place in Berlin and the series will premiere on EPIX in the fall of 2016.

Previously announced cast includes: Richard Armitage as Daniel Miller, the cerebral, newly-anointed CIA officer who goes from being an analyst at Langley to an undercover officer in Berlin tasked with finding a leak. In addition, Emmy® Award nominee Michelle Forbes (“The Killing,” “True Blood,” The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2) plays Valerie Edwards, the no-nonsense administrator who serves as a Berlin Station Internal Branch Chief; Emmy Award® winner and Academy Award® nominee Richard Jenkins (“Olive Kitteridge,” The Visitor) as Steven Frost, a veteran of the Cold War who serves as the CIA’s Berlin Chief of Station; BAFTA Award-winner Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1, “Elementary,” Notting Hill) as dark, charming and tenacious Case Officer Hector DeJean, an old friend of Miller.

New cast joining Berlin Station’s ensemble includes: Tamlyn Tomita (“Resurrection,” The Day After Tomorrow) as Sandra Abe, a quiet presence lording over the efficient operation of Berlin Station while having an affair with her boss, Steven Frost; Leland Orser (“Ray Donovan”) as Robert Kirsch, a devoted and successful Deputy Chief who digs intelligence out of the capital through a mix of force, diligence and cleverness; Richard Dillane (“Wolf Hall,” The Dark Knight) as Deputy Liaison Gerald Ellman, a gentle, reserved man who plans his transfer to Budapest, but finds himself in a position of being collateral damage; and Bernhard Schütz (A Most Wanted Man) as Hans Richter, an old-world spy who has risen, against all odds, to the highest ranks of the BfV.

Michaël Roskam (BullheadThe Drop) is an executive producer on the straight-to-series order and is directing the first two episodes. New York Times best-selling spy novelist Olen Steinhauer (The TouristAll The Old Knives, The Cairo Affair) created the series and is also an executive producer. Bradford Winters (“Dig,” “The Americans,” “Boss,” “Oz”) is the showrunner and an executive producer. Other executive producers for the series include Academy Award® winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The InsiderMunich, “House of Cards”), and Steve Golin, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Keith Redmon and Luke Rivett from Anonymous Content (“True Detective,” “The Knick,” “Mr. Robot”).

“With Olen’s vision and a stellar cast, we believe Berlin Station is a game-changing project,” said Mark S. Greenberg, President and CEO, EPIX. “This powerful series has all the elements that we want to define EPIX as we launch our scripted programming slate: quality production values, a brilliant creative team and riveting storytelling.”

Berlin Station follows Daniel Miller, who has just arrived at the CIA foreign station in Berlin, Germany. Miller has a clandestine mission: to determine the identity of a now-famous whistleblower masquerading as “Thomas Shaw.” Guided by jaded veteran Hector DeJean, Daniel learns to contend with the rough-and-tumble world of the field officer—agent-running, deception, danger and moral compromises. As he dives deeper into the German capital’s hall of mirrors and uncovers the threads of a conspiracy that leads back to Washington, Daniel wonders: Can anyone ever be the same after a posting to Berlin?

An Exclusive Presentation That Goes Behind the Scenes to Tell the Remarkable History of the Rocky Franchise

Features Interviews with Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers, Dolph Lundgren, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Milo Ventimiglia and Ryan Coogler

 Airs Wednesday, November 18 at 8PM ET/PT, 7CT

Rocky is a film that parallels Sylvester Stallone’s own true story of obscurity to success. The one hour documentary tells the pugilistic love story from beginning to end directly through its creator, Stallone, who was virtually unknown in 1976 when he persuaded producers and a major studio to let him star in the film he pennedThe movie told the gritty tale of a working class boxer who gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champion, and the film quickly became an overnight success, garnering three Academy Awards®, including Best Picture. It launched Stallone’s career as a box office megastar, spawned an iconic Billboard #1 theme song, and introduced the use of the Steadicam, which revolutionized the filmmaking industry.

FROM ROCKY TO CREED: THE LEGACY CONTINUES captures Sylvester Stallone and producers Irwin Winkler and the late Robert Chartoff sharing the franchise’s Cinderella story from the first film to the critically and commercially-successful sixth film, Rocky Balboa. Featured are Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed in Rocky I, II, III, IV) and Dolph Lundgren (Ivan Drago in Rocky IV), both of whom talk about the physicality and preparations to play their characters and how they landed the roles of their lives; Milo Ventimiglia (Robert Balboa, Jr. in Rocky Balboa) on playing Rocky’s son; and Academy Award®-winning director of photography and Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown  (Rocky I, II) recounts the challenges attached to shooting the boxing sequences and how his invention captured the most memorable scene in the movie which, in Stallone’s words, led to “the shot of my life.”

The documentary also offers multi-generational fans an inside look at the new chapter in the Rocky story, Creed. The upcoming film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema is directed by award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and stars Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station, Fantastic Four) as Adonis Johnson, the son of Apollo Creed; Academy Award® nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role; Tessa Thompson (Selma, Dear White People) as Bianca, a local singer-songwriter who becomes involved with Adonis; Phylicia Rashad (Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias”) as Mary Anne Creed; and English pro boxer and former three-time ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew as boxing champ “Pretty” Ricky Conlan. Coogler directs from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington, story by Coogler, based on characters from the Rocky series written by Sylvester Stallone.  The film hits theaters on November 25, 2015. For more about Creed, go to http://creedthemovie.com.

FROM ROCKY TO CREED: THE LEGACY CONTINUES highlights the strong mentoring relationship between Stallone and Coogler, as well as the impact of the Apollo Creed character on our culture and the intense and inspirational preparations undertaken to deliver another new storyline for the enduring line of Rocky films.
